Lasair Dhearg condemns the Dublin Government’s plans to privatise the GPO, with the view of selling it off to the highest bidder. This move represents the latest assault by the major Free State parties, Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil, on Ireland’s proud revolutionary republican history.
The Dublin Government naively believes that the social issues that exist within Dublin city centre, caused by decades of social neglect, can be solved by waving the wand of privatisation. This not only highlights their subservience to the capitalist system, but shows their sheer incompetence.
Dublin, along with the rest of Ireland, is crying out for a radical shift from the system of of capitalist greed, which now threatens to swallow our national history, desecrating Ireland’s most important historical site in the process.
The site of the 1916 Easter Rising must be treated with the respect it deserves, the GPO must stand proudly as a monument to Ireland’s revolutionary struggle, not as a monument to private profit.
Our History is not for sale!
