It is with great disappointment that Lasair Dhearg informs our membership and support base that the planned ‘Night of Song & Poetry’ commemorating the end of the 1981 Hungerstrike will no longer go ahead as planned on the 5th of October, as the venue has pulled the plug.

Spokesperson Pádraic Mac Coitir said, “We believe that the decision reached by Sarsfields, who hosted a similar event for us a number of months ago, was as a result of political maneuvering by others. It does not go unnoticed by us that this is the second event organised by Lasair Dhearg in recent months, which has had significant barriers placed in front of it.”

“Having consulted with the venue over the last number of weeks with regards to planning, significant cost was assigned and spent on its promotion and organising, including 200 tickets, 5,000 leaflets, and 500 A3 posters which will now not be distributed. An organisation such as ours, which receives its funds from its members and supporters, will no doubt feel the impact of this.”

“An alternative venue was sought over the last few days, and none could be found within the timeframe allowed to rehost the event.”

“We send thanks to our members and supporters, particularly the Lasair Dhearg Commemoration Committee, and we look forward to working with you all in the build up to our next planned event.”
