Lasair Dhearg to commemorate the 1981 Hunger Strike in its 40th anniversary year.

The Socialist Republican organisation Lasair Dhearg has announced that it plans to commemorate the 1981 hunger strike in its 40th anniversary year, 2021.

Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Pádraic MacCoitir said, “today is an important day and an opportune time for us to announce our intentions to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the hunger strike as today marks 39 years since the end of the 1981 hunger strike.”

“It is vital that republicans organise fitting tributes for those who have given their lives during the strike and that their memory is not used for political vantage by nationalists or blackened by the forces of the occupation.”

“In their memory we plan to organise fitting tributes to those volunteers, bringing together credible and committed republicans who are still committed to the cause that the hunger strikers gave their lives; for freedom and liberation; both economic and sovereign.

“Over the last number of months Lasair Dhearg has issued invites to individuals from within the wider republican community with the view of establishing a committee that will organise  fitting tributes to those that gave their lives during hunger strike in 1981 and to ensure that their analysis and legacy does not fall foul to revisionism or the cause of constitutional nationalism. Over the next number of weeks we plan to consolidate that committee and formally announce its launch and establishment.”
