Nakba – Ireland on the march for Palestine

Ireland is marching for the Palestinian people today [15th of May 2021], amid ongoing attacks on Gaza and occupied Palestine.

Today marks the 73rd anniversary of the ‘Nakba’, the Palestinian ‘catastrophe’. The Nakba refers to the 1948 ethnic cleansing of 750,000 Palestinians from their land by Zionist forces to begin the formation of the state of Israel.

The following is a series of highlights covering a day of action across Ireland.

The previous days saw activists across Belfast conduct other solidarity actions in support of Palestine, including erecting flags, targeting businesses with links to the Israeli forces, and solidarity pickets:

Between 1947 and 1949: 750,000 Palestinians from a 1.9 million population were made refugees beyond the borders of the state. Zionist forces seized more than 78% of historic Palestine, ethnically cleansed and destroyed 530 villages and cities, and killed 15,000 Palestinians in a series of mass atrocities – including more than 70 massacres.

This was a co-ordinated operation launched by the Zionist paramilitary force the ‘Haganah’ known as ‘Plan Dalet’.

Today we remember the atrocity that is the Nakba, and take a stand with our Palestinian brothers and sisters this Nakba Day by expressing our solidarity through action.
