Revelations in Leinster House have once again exposed the disdain with which Free State Universities, and other institutions, hold women and victims of sexual assault.
A young medical student at UCD who was raped was refused the chance to resit her exams after having to undergo an abortion after becoming pregnant. The university then tried to make her resit the year which would would have meant sitting alongside her rapist – a student in the year below her.
She sued UCD to prevent this happening but is now being hounded for hundreds of thousands of euros in legal fees after the High Court in Dublin ruled against her.
We live in a system which dehumanises women and so long as the current patriarchal society continues to exist, so too will the treatment of women displayed in this case.
