In recent days the people of Derry took direct action in overturning the eviction of a family from their home in Abbey Street in the Bogside by the Six County Housing Executive.
A single parent and his three children were left on the street after unmarked contractors boarded up the property, connected to their family for over 70 years. In response, the community tore down the barriers, allowing the three children to sleep in their own beds that very night.
This should set a clear precedent; that working-class people will not allow the State, backed up an occupying police force to forcibly evict people from their homes.
We are in full solidarity with those resisting eviction in Derry and elsewhere, and encourage everyone who can do so, to support the family in their fight to remain in their home.
