Lasair Dhearg wish to express our support for those striking in Dublin and across Ireland in opposition to the unsustainable and exploitative rise in fuel costs over recent weeks. We wish success and encourage protests to hold fast against the threats of the State.
Not for many years has such decisive action been taken in countering the greed of the international cartels who for decades have seized upon every international crisis in their endless pursuit for profit.
People from across all of society, whether farmers from County Donegal or couriers from Dublin, are being pushed to breaking point. The fuel hikes will not only affect those taking action. All the essentials of life will become more expensive. The working class of Ireland should not have to fit the bill for Yankee imperialism abroad, and corporate greed at home.
The vilification of these protests by the ruling parties of the 26 County State comes as no surprise to us. In labelling them as an attack on society, alongside the threats to use armed force to break them up, it’s clear that they are trying to divide supporters.
Socialists and Republicans need to meet the people where they are, not on Instagram or Twitter, but on the streets. We need to stand with them, providing material support and solidarity to those brave enough to take action. It is important to stand in solidarity with our fellow workers, and to counter any and all attempts by the far-right to co-opt working class causes. Like with housing, those on the right will seek to adopt this struggle to push their own narrative, a narrative which detracts from the economic underpinnings of the protest and shoves the blame onto those below them in society, not above.
Republicans needs to join this struggle, where liberals will not, and help steer the course against the real enemy of the Irish people: the capitalist class in Leinster House and their economic masters running the energy cartels.
As long as a system which places the profits of the minority over the needs of the majority continues to exist, the quality of our everyday lives will deteriorate. Only Socialism can stop corporate speculation from decimating our quality of life.
