PSNI Injury Claims “Large scale theft from the public purse” says Pól Torbóid

PSNI Injury Claims “Large scale theft from the public purse” says Pól Torbóid

Almost half a Billion pounds has been paid out to PSNI officers and prison service personnel over supposed ‘injury claims’ recent figures show.

Britain’s public spending watchdog recently released a report detailing the costs, indicating that since 2015 claims have ‘soared’. Some of those payments, claimed many years after a supposed incident has occured, have been backdated decades, sending individual claims as high as almost £0.5 Million.

Speaking regarding the recent report, Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Pól Torbóid said that “this report details that in comparison to other British front line forces there is a massive gap in outcome regarding injury payouts, with the Six Counties ‘significantly greater’ than England.”

Pól said, “This report details, in cold hard facts, the increased likelihood of a PSNI member to pursue an injury claim in comparison to other forces, indicating a possible culture within the frontline force of pursuance of a ‘quick pay day’. Indeed, in the Six Counties there are 12 claims a week on average, some resulting in one off injury claims, topped up by monthly payments for life. Of a force of approximately 7,000 members, almost 3,000 serving or retired officers receive payments.”

“This isn’t a new issue either; as far back as November 2014 it was reported that more than 10,000 former RUC officers had lodged claims, stating their hearing was damaged. Up until then, the total amount paid out was over £135 Million; almost half of which was paid to legal firms and courts.”

“This recent report supports other historical evidence of a culture of pursuance of damages within Britain’s frontline forces, which is subsequently supported by the British state with massive payouts. These claims and others may very well represent large scale theft from the public purse by Britain’s security apparatus.”

International Women’s Day 2020

A Lasair Dhearg contingent was in attendance at the International Women’s Day event in Belfast City Centre today. Assembling at Writer’s Square, thousands made their way to Belfast City Hall as part of the event.

Lasair Dhearg member Nicola Nic Gabhann said that today’s march was about “remembering all those women who have walked before us, making those same demands but also of rededicating ourselves to ensure that those demands are met with the justice that they deserve”.

Speaking from Belfast City Centre, Nicola said “our activists unfurled a banner at the march featuring IRA Volunteer Mairéad Farrell. Herself a Belfast woman, the anniversary of her execution by British forces occurred just yesterday. Mairéad fought hard to deconstruct the social, economic and political system that enforced the subjugation of not just her people, but also her gender.”

“Days like today are bittersweet. It is sad that the rights that Mairéad and others fought for are still being demanded by women more than 30 years since her death; though it is also an inspiration to see so many people, young and old, getting feet on the street on days like this to demand those rights.”

“Mairéad said that ‘we can only end our oppression as women, if we end the oppression of our nation’, and in that, there is an eternal truth; we can only bring about real lasting social justice and equality for all within a Socialist Republic. A Republic that will foist upon its flag the rights of those who hold up half of the sky.”

Mairéad Farrell – The Gibraltar Three

The following is rare footage of Mairéad Farrell speaking of her experiences in British jails in Ireland, including strip searches and controlled movement – tactics utilised to this day in those same jails against Republican prisoners.

Mairéad was killed on this day in 1988, just three days after her 31st birthday, which was less than one year from the recording of this footage. Mairéad and the two comrades she was with, Sean Savage and Dan McCann, were mown down in broad daylight by British Forces. The three IRA Volunteers were unarmed, and no attempts were made to arrest them.

“No Welcome Mat for Imperialists” – Ciarán O’Brien

“No Welcome Mat for Imperialists” – Ciarán O’Brien

William Windsor, senior royal & second in line to the British throne “looking forward to building a lasting friendship with the Irish people” Britain’s Kensington Palace has said. The comments come in advance of a visit to Irish soil. William, erstwhile British Army officer and Air Force pilot, will meet with senior members of the 26 County establishment in the coming days.

Speaking regarding the upcoming visit, Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Ciarán O’Brien said that “Contrary to the message propagated by the establishment media, Republican opposition to Irish visits from British ‘Royalty’ is not based upon religious sectarianism or anti-English sentiment. It is instead based upon the unwavering Republican position of equality and anti-Imperialism.”

“The links between the British Royal family and the state’s armed forces are quite clear. Most senior Royals serve in the British military in some capacity or other, and every member of those armed forces swears an oath of allegiance to the ruling monarch before being shipped off to maintain Britain’s crumbling global empire.”

O’Brien said that, “There are those who would meet, and extend warm handshakes, with those ‘royals’ who are by birthright designated as the leadership of Britain’s Armed Forces. That same state and colonial power that maintains the occupation of Ireland’s Six Counties by force of arms.”

“This visit, facilitated by the 26 County state and others, is a critical part of Britain’s strategy of ‘normalisation’ in Ireland. The ‘normalisation’ process and strategy, publicly known, aims to present the continued occupation of part of Ireland as normal; it is designed to present Britain’s imposed border in our country as normal.”

“There can be no welcome mat for imperialists, ‘royal’ or otherwise. We oppose inherited privilege; we oppose the class system; and we firmly oppose British royal visits.”

“Britain out of Ireland.”

“We hold Sinn Féin directly responsible for this” – Pól Torbóid

“We hold Sinn Féin directly responsible for this” – Pól Torbóid

Recruitment posters for Britain’s ‘Royal Navy’ have appeared adjacent to PSNI advertisements along West Belfast arterial routes following Sinn Féin’s recent endorsement of the front line force.

Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Pól Torbóid said “We were made aware of the Royal Navy advertising throughout the course of today as a number of locals had contacted our organisation citing our recent highlighting of similar PSNI posters.”

“We do not need to recount the terrible history of British State forces in Ireland, for it is well known. That history lives on in the hearts and minds of those in our community who suffered greatly at the hands of those forces.”

The posters state ‘Now recruiting reservists in Belfast’ alongside a Royal Navy flag featuring a St. George’s Cross and Union Jack.

Torbóid continued, “It is quite clear that, in recent weeks, a clear move toward the further ‘normalisation’ of Britain’s security forces in Ireland has been taking place. Alongside the very public Sinn Féin endorsement of the PSNI, a more visible presence of the force was seen on the ground. This featured the very unusual site of PSNI foot patrols in the heart of Republican communities such as Lenadoon and elsewhere – no doubt backed up by heavily armed and armoured personnel, parked in side streets.”

“The British State now feel secure enough in their position to role out these highly offensive advertisements in the heart of the communities they once decimated, and they are doing so without any opposition from Stormont political parties.”

“We hold Sinn Féin directly responsible for this.”

“Unforgivable” – Lasair Dhearg respond to Sinn Féin’s Gerry Kelly

“Unforgivable” – Lasair Dhearg respond to Sinn Féin’s Gerry Kelly

Last night [11/02/2020], Lasair Dhearg activists erected a banner on the external fence of the Andersonstown News offices in West Belfast.

The content of the banner, ‘Andersonstown News – British State Media’, rightly highlights the use of the privately owned business as a platform for recruitment to the British crown forces; specifically, the PSNI.

Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Pádraic MacCoitir said, “The Andersonstown News, owned by millionaire and senior Sinn Féin member Máirtín Ó Muilleoir, recently ran several advertisements for the PSNI, aiming to recruit new members, which included social media content. This was done in the wake of a very high profile recruitment campaign launch which was supported by senior members of Sinn Féin and which is accompanied by street level advertising with posters along arterial routes through West Belfast.

“It is quite clear that a range of forces are being brought to bear to bring about a situation where the PSNI is further normalised in our communities. That is unforgivable.

“Our position is this, the PSNI is a heavily armed colonial police force. It did not replace the RUC but merely absorbed it, its personnel, their weaponry, resources, legislative powers, hierarchy and more importantly, its purpose. It is, and continues to be, the front line force for the continued occupation of our Six Counties.

Pádraic continued, “Alongside the rebranding of the RUC, giving birth to the PSNI, the notorious RUC Special Branch was given the same treatment, creating ‘C3 Intelligence Branch’. It is public knowledge that this new ‘Special Branch’ and the everyday activities of the PSNI are directed by British state intelligence, Mi5.

“In regards to recent commentary from Sinn Féin’s Gerry Kelly, insinuating supposed ‘threats’ to staff at the Andersonstown News. We are aware that certain staff members are not happy about the placement of the advertisements in the paper and may have already raised this issue with senior staff. For those members of staff to be further used by Sinn Féin for political capital is all the more tragic.

“We support those staff members and we hold senior members of Sinn Féin and their control of this paper accountable for providing the outlet as a platform.

“Republicans will continue to organise against the state, and any platform that it is given.”

Sinn Féin publicly endorse PSNI – again.

Sinn Féin publicly endorse PSNI – again.

Senior members of Sinn Féin are now doing publicly what everyone knew they were doing all along.

Senior members of the organisation, including Stormont Deputy First Minister Michelle O’Neill and former IRA prisoner Gerry Kelly, have today attended a PSNI recruitment event – throwing their weight behind the organisation and further endorsing their strategy, aims and objectives.

Pól Torbóid

Pól Torbóid

Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Pól Torbóid said, “This event is part of a process of measures aimed at recruiting individuals from a specific demographic, and the attendance of two notable figures from Sinn Féin, one a former IRA prisoner, is a clear message to the Republican and Nationalist community to come forward and join the force.”

“If you are thinking of joining the PSNI, you should consider that doing so will be a life changing event, not just for you, but for your family.”

“How will you feel when members of the force continue to phone Social Services on families, wasting precious resources in order to harass community and political activists – acts that are currently being well documented and have been endorsed publicly by the most senior of ‘peelers’. How will you feel, as a member of the force, when you see your neighbours being stopped for the fifth time in a day, for no good reason other than they are organising to better their communities.”

“The PSNI are no different than the RUC, with the exception that they have a good PR department and endorsements from former republicans.”

“We know that not all members of Sinn Féin support the PSNI, and would call on those individuals to speak up. Otherwise, we risk the continued alignment of ‘mainstream republicanism’ with the British state.”

“Reject the PSNI.”

[VIDEO] Event: Political Policing & Oppressive Legislation

[VIDEO] Event: Political Policing & Oppressive Legislation

It was standing room only, as several dozen gathered in the conference room of Belfast’s Conway Mill yesterday evening [Thursday 30th of January] to discuss the ongoing use of legislation by the British state, as a tool of political harassment.

Pádraic MacCoitir (Right)

Pádraic MacCoitir (Right)

The proceedings were opened by Pádraic MacCoitir who chaired the event. Pádraic detailed his experiences of political activism over many decades, and the use of different forms of legislation during those years; from house raids to ‘Stop & Searches’ as a method of supposed intimidation.

Political and community activist Risteárd Ó Murchú, a republican ex-prisoner, provided an account of the harassment he has received in more recent times at the hands of the PSNI. Detailing how that harassment affected not just him but also his family, Risteárd noted that it is clear that certain legislation, specifically the ‘Justice and Security Act’, is utilised as a tool of isolation.

Risteárd Ó Murchú (Left)

The manner in which certain ‘Stop & Searches’ are conducted lend truth to this, where a supposed ‘search’ often doesn’t actually take place in any effective manner; an example being where a vehicle has been stopped and the occupants very publicly searched by the side of the road, but oftentimes the vehicle is not searched at all.

Solicitor Michael Brentnall of Brentnall Legal continued proceedings, giving a short synopsis of different forms of legislation over the years, culminating in the current use of the ‘Terrorism Act’, the ‘Justice and Security Act’ and more recently the ‘Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act 2019’; the latter, like those before it, raising some serious questions about the potential use of the Act as a tool of harassment and circumvention of basic human rights.

The event was brought to a close with a very informative Q&A session, where attendees helped to tease out some of the serious question marks now being raised by the new legislation.

‘Reject PSNI Recruitment Campaign’ – Lasair Dhearg

‘Reject PSNI Recruitment Campaign’ – Lasair Dhearg

Lasair Dhearg, a political Movement organising for a 32 County Socialist Republic, has called on community organisations and political groups to reject an ongoing PSNI recruitment campaign.

Group spokesperson Pól Torbóid said that “in recent days, advertising has appeared on bus stops across Belfast and beyond, highlighting an upcoming recruitment drive for British security force, the PSNI.”

“We understand that the advertisements were strategically placed to recruit from a specific demographic; namely students and individuals from working class backgrounds including predominantly Republican areas.”

Torbóid added “In Belfast so far, one advertisement has appeared on a main arterial route through the West of the city, and the other in an area frequented by a large student population from nearby Queen’s University; suggesting that the force hopes to recruit from those areas in particular.”

“It seems as though the recruitment campaign has been targeted by local members of the activist group ‘Red Section’ who have since posted content on social media.”

“We call on local people to continue to reject the PSNI. If the ongoing occupation of Ireland’s Six Counties isn’t reason enough, then a cursory glance at the activities of the force will expose their real motives. Local community and political activists continually face incessant harassment from armed PSNI personnel via oppressive political legislation; as well as persistent recruitment attempts by the PSNI’s secretive ‘C3 Intelligence Branch’, among other agencies.”

“As long as Irish families continue to seek justice, fighting tooth and nail against a supposed ‘police service’ who curtails their attempts at every move, hiding evidence and blocking investigations, then we cannot understand why any person or group, Republican or otherwise, would lend this organisation their support.”

“Any individual who joins or works for the PSNI, indirectly or otherwise, should be ostracised and rejected in the same manner as the force itself.”

Lasair Dhearg now organising in Scotland

Lasair Dhearg now organising in Scotland.

(L-R) Pádraic MacCoitir, Ciarán O'Brien

(L-R) Pádraic MacCoitir, Ciarán O’Brien

Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Ciarán O’Brien said that “a few short months ago, our Movement announced the launch of a new supporters network. Clann Lasrach Deirge is intended to provide a home, both in Ireland and internationally, for those who support our growing movement and the demand for a 32 County Irish Socialist Republic.”

“Clann, though only a number of weeks old, now has a small but global membership, from North America, Ireland, Sweden, Australia, England and Scotland. Our eventual goal is to have full and functioning branches in those areas and more. To build not just support and global awareness of Ireland’s struggle for freedom, but a genuine international anti-imperialist movement with activism as a core component.”

“We send our gratitude and support to comrades in Scotland, who in the next number of months will be working to develop a more established presence there. The links between our two nations and our combined history in struggle speaks for itself. Ireland’s fight for freedom, without the unwavering support of our comrades in Scotland over many generations, would have been significantly hampered; for this we are forever indebted.

“If you live in Scotland or indeed elsewhere, and support the fight for Irish national liberation, join our supporters network, visit our website, contact our members, or get in touch with our social media pages – the amount of time and support you give, is entirely up to you.”

‘Survitec’ – Serving Imperialism

‘Survitec’ – Serving Imperialism

Last night, Monday 20th of January, Lasair Dhearg activists paid a visit to Survitec base of operations on Irish soil. As part of our campaign aimed at highlighting imperialism in Ireland and elsewhere, activists erected a banner along the front of the Survitec site, notifying passers-by and nearby residents of the extent of which the company is involved in the business of imperialist expansionism.

As an example of where businesses in Ireland fit into the global neo-colonial structure, Survitec is up there with the best of them. Founded in 1920, the international conglomerate has a global presence that includes Britain, the US, Hong Kong, Australia, Singapore and Dunmurry, Ireland.

Just outside Belfast, their Irish office receives their orders from the Survitec Group Head Office based in the heart of Britain’s most imperial city; London. Its customers include the British Ministry of Defence, the US Navy & Air Force, Royal Australian Air Force & Navy, international oil thieves Shell, and weapons producers Lockheed Martin & BAE Systems.

Survitec F-35 Flight Suit

The company has its own dedicated ‘Aerospace & Defence’ department, which specialises in the provision of goods and services to governments and military throughout the world, keeping their global war machines ticking. According to the company themselves, they are “…a global leader in the manufacture…[and] supply… of defence and aerospace survival technology.”

In short, the company is integrated root and branch in the business of imperialism. A significant amount of its profits are received from governments and military budgets who require the company’s services in their ongoing wars across the globe.

Survitec flight suits can be found worn by fighter pilots as they grace the skies of conflict zones in the Middle East. Dedicated Survitec facilities produce the suits and other materials for the ‘Joint Strike Fighter’, the new F-35 Stealth multi-role fighter jet, to be used by the United States, Britain and their NATO allies.

These nations also utilise inflatable tactical training structures developed by the company. Significant contracts include the U.S. Air Force along with security forces across the USA, Europe and Asia Pacific.

Whilst Survitec also make safety and survival equipment for the marine environment etc,. this contrasts sharply with the provision of goods and materials used in the dispensing of death across the globe. There is a moral imperative for this business to shut down its aerospace and defence operations, particularly in Ireland, and to focus on the manufacture of other goods.

Survitec is but one example of a whole network of businesses and other organisations operating in Ireland who profit from the provision of services & materials of war. The continued use of Ireland as a base of operations for profit-making for these companies must end. The only solution is the removal of both failed states on the island; ending the British occupation of Ireland’s Six Counties; and a new 32 County Socialist Republic that cherishes not just all the children of the Irish nation but across the globe – an Irish Socialist Republic that can serve as a shining example to the international community.

End Imperialism!

2020 New Year Statement

Lasair Dhearg New Year Statement – 2020

At the inception of another decade, Ireland’s place within the global imperialist structure is solidified. US equipment and troops continue to transit through Irish airports as they ferry their way to various war zones across the globe. Finance capital transfers funds in the other direction; Ireland is now a global postcode for a complicated accounting system which offers a simple method to legally wash cash through various checks and balances without the need to pay any meaningful amount of tax. This, and more, happens with the continued blessing of various 26 County governments.

Ireland’s Six occupied counties remain firmly within Britain’s grasp, with thousands of armed personnel, associated military equipment and apparatus scattered across scores of military bases and ‘police’ barracks within the territory – all lavishly supported by a multi-billion pound military budget.

This new year beckons with the supposed hope that a Six County government can be revived through Stormont power sharing mechanisms. Such hope is presented mostly by a compliant media, whose focus is oftentimes regurgitated by an ever more consenting populace.

Mainstream political parties post Good Friday, specifically Sinn Féin and the SDLP, have had now more than two decades to bring about their stated aims of Irish unity. These years have been peppered with elections, each we were told, more important than the last; the basis of which was the reduction of previously stated Republican aims and objectives to the fight for ‘rights’ within the context of the Six County state. Such rights have been largely unattainable through the mechanism that has been advocated to achieve those rights; Stormont.

More recently, the unseating of arch-Unionist Nigel Dodds from his Westminster seat in North Belfast by Sinn Féin’s John Finucane, has been lauded as a huge success for Republicanism. In reality, it served merely to paper over the cracks in the foundations of the Sinn Féin electoral machine as they continue to rake in huge losses in voter numbers across the island, more notably perhaps in Derry.

Rents continue to rise alongside homelessness. Poverty statistics increase in correlation with austerity measures implemented through Westminster and with the blessing of Stormont political parties.

In the absence of a clear strategy, mainstream Republicanism has been reduced to achieving its aims in name only, absent of any qualitative change. A border poll offers hope to mainstream political groups like Sinn Féin of achieving a 32 county ‘Republic’, albeit one stripped of all the vestiges of Republican aims and objectives; an empty vessel, stripped of genuine content. Sinn Féin et al. would do well to acknowledge the failure of Brexit from a British point of view. They demanded an exit from the EU without knowing what it really was or what the outcome would be. The absence of a true definition had the resultant effect of purging it of all content beyond that which it was; an exit from the EU. The outcome was years of turmoil and division, as yet unresolved, as political groups jostle to give it definition.

Ireland, particularly the Six Counties, faces a similar outcome if those advocating a border poll do not guarantee what that ‘new Ireland’ will be; a guarantee which cannot be given, absent of any mechanism to secure it in advance of any possible vote; a vote only granted at the whim of a foreign ‘Secretary of State’.

This, and more, is the context within which Republicanism now finds itself. There is no doubt that we exist in a period of disarray. The Irish people could be forgiven for suggesting that we have little to offer, little of course except hope and aspiration for genuine change. When faced with disappointment, disharmony and disarray, we have no other option but to organise.

Change must happen, not just on a geographic scale, but on an economic level as well.

Lasair Dhearg was formed more than two years ago with this in mind. This last year, our focus was on creating solid foundations upon which a growing political movement could be created. Aspirations exist for that movement to be island wide, with branches spanning Ireland’s thirty two counties. With this in mind our membership implemented new political structures in the latter part of the last year. With a new executive body and branch structure, Lasair Dhearg endorsed an updated constitution as the framework within which this movement will be constructed. This internal reorganisation gave life to a new supporters’ network, Clann Lasrach Deirge, which in its initial days had a growing membership in the US, Australia, Scotland, England and continental Europe.

We remain fervently Socialist Republican; our vision is that which was expounded by Connolly, and further endorsed by Mellows, Sands, Farrell and more. We seek nothing less than the full re-conquest of our nation; geographic, economic, linguistic & cultural. We are focused on a new strategic direction; believing that the building of a mass movement can create the conditions within which the Irish working class can set about the seizure of the state apparatus beginning at a local level; the initial stages of which will be the control of various economic processes within the community.

If 2019 was the year of creating solid foundations for Lasair Dhearg, then 2020 will be our year of activism; to further build upon the firm footing we have laid. Political activism is the food that nourishes all political movements. In the year ahead we will be organising against all aspects of imperialism in Ireland; wherever its tentacles reach, our activists will plan to cut them off.

We invite you to join us on this journey. “Opportunities are for those who seize them,” said James Connolly, “the coming year may be as bright as we choose to make it.”

Lasair Dhearg Announce Supporters’ Network

Lasair Dhearg Announce Supporters’ Network

Lasair Dhearg has announced the creation of a new supporters’ network aiming to consolidate its growing national and international support.

Lasair Dhearg spokesperson, Republican ex-prisoner and Blanketman Pádraic Mac Coitir, said that the launch of Clann Lasrach Deirge was “a new initiative so that we can properly engage with the growing levels of support for our Movement across Ireland and internationally.”

Pádraic Mac Coitir, Lasair Dhearg Spokesperson

Pádraic Mac Coitir, Lasair Dhearg Spokesperson

He said, “Since our formation two years ago it has become increasingly clear to us the need for a formal supporters’ organisation. Activists and those politically aligned to Lasair Dhearg in other countries have indicated their willingness to support our Movement in a more formal capacity, and Clann Lasrach Deirge will allow us to do just that.”

“Lasair Dhearg is an organisation focused on political activism, and in launching the new supporters’ network we are acknowledging that there are people who, for a number of very genuine reasons, are unable to give the time and focus to Lasair Dhearg itself, but would desire to become a formal part of our growing project; to formally align themselves with our Movement, and to support our aims, objectives and analysis . We hope that this launch will allow us to build upon the good work of our activists at a local level as we strive to build a new national organisation fighting for a 32 County Socialist Republic.”

“As we take another meaningful step forward, we now invite and encourage those who have been following the significant job of work we have undertaken these past twenty-four months to join Clann Lasrach Deirge.

If you are reading this, and live in Ireland or indeed outside of it, you should consider taking the small but worthwhile step of coming with us as we build a new and radical Movement for Socialist Republicanism in Ireland. Be one of the first to join us – and once you have, don’t forget to share so that you can alert others to our new network.”

On a Border Poll – Lasair Dhearg

On a Border Poll

“We do not see merit in campaigning for a border poll in Ireland”, says Lasair Dhearg spokesperson Pól Torbóid, “the unity of two failed states into a singular failed entity will not advance the cause of the Irish working class.”

Pól said that, “In order to be ‘successful’, a border poll campaign must build the broadest movement possible with support not just from the working class but also the business community and the interests of capital. The building of such a movement in Ireland is already taking place, emulating those which have been created in Catalonia, Scotland and elsewhere; which are largely absent of any beneficial economic narrative beyond that which would serve those who would benefit from large financial dividends as a result of this supposed ‘unity’.”

“There is no mechanism to ensure a socialist outcome, material conditions will remain unchanged regardless of which class in society makes the demand for a border poll or brings it about.”

“There are those who argue that so long as the working class can build and control the campaign, then they can control its outcome in the interests of our class. This is, in our view, a mistake. Those who advocate such a position have so far failed to present any coherent or reasonable analysis to support this as an outcome. There is no escaping the fact that, regardless of who makes the demand, or indeed creates the right circumstances within which a border poll could come about, be it the broad working masses or the landlord class, the material outcomes of a single issue campaign such as a border poll are inevitable. It will not have dealt with the single cause of concern that underpins the inequality of both the Stormont and Leinster House governments; capitalism.”

“A border poll is a romantic notion. The demands made for one are largely absent of any materialist analysis; acknowledging this, and pursuing it anyway, with the notion that we can later pursue socialism is a mistake. It is, in essence, a ‘labour must wait’ attitude. As socialists, our position is that expounded by Connolly, where ‘The cause of labour is the cause of Ireland, the cause of Ireland is the cause of labour. They cannot be dissevered.’ We understand that the fight for national sovereignty and economic sovereignty are inseparable. A border poll deals only with the former, arguing that economic sovereignty can be pursued thereafter. Any subsequent negotiations, post-border poll, would allow our enemies to give as much freedom as is convenient for them to give.”

“For these reasons and more, we reject the growing calls for a border poll in favour of other methods. We believe that the route to the Socialist Republic, and freedom from both geographic and economic exploitation, lies in the seizure of the economic processes of society at a local level, and that to achieve this a mass organisation or movement must be built.”

“We’ll let Connolly have the last word on the matter, he said, ‘If you remove the English army tomorrow and hoist the green flag over Dublin Castle, unless you set about the organization of the Socialist Republic your efforts would be in vain. England would still rule you. She would rule you through her capitalists, through her landlords, through her financiers, through the whole array of commercial and individualist institutions she has planted in this country and watered with the tears of our mothers and the blood of our martyrs.'”

Winifred Carney Remembered in Belfast

On Saturday the 23rd of November, Republicans and Socialists gathered in Belfast’s Milltown Cemetery to remember Winifred Carney, a member of the Irish Citizen Army and Cumann na mBan.

Chaired by Republican ex-Prisoner Pádraic Mac Coitir, the event was addressed by Martine Jackson, a member of the Lasair Dhearg Commemoration Committee. The full text of her speech is below:

“We stand here today to commemorate Winifred Carney – a feminist, a socialist, and most of all: a
Republican.

“Born on the 4 th December 1887 into a middle class Catholic and Protestant family in Bangor, County
Down. The family moved to Falls Road in Belfast, where Carney would be raised by her single
mother, and would be educated at the Christian Brothers School in Donegall Street, not far from
here.

“Carney enrolled at Hughes Commercial Academy in 1910, where she qualified as a secretary and
shorthand typist, one of the first women in Belfast to do so.

“The following year Winifred Carney alongside Delia Larkin founded the Irish Textile Workers’ Union
in Belfast, a sister body to Connolly and Larkins Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union. By 1912
she would come to lead the I.T.W.U as its secretary, and work to win women into the ranks of the
union. It was in this position that Carney finally met James Connolly.

“Carney would become Connolly’s friend and confidant as they worked together to improve the
conditions for female labourers in Belfast, organising for rights and suffrage among female factory
labourers. Together they co-wrote the Manifesto to the Linen Slaves of Belfast.
She was instrumental in fundraising for the striking workers of the 1913 Dublin Lock-out, and in 1914
would be one of ten founding members of Cumann na mBan within which she gained reputation as a
proficient sharpshooter and first aider.

“By 1916, as the Easter Rising was being prepared, Winnie, now aged 29, was Connollyʼs personal
secretary and held the rank of Adjutant in the Irish Citizen Army. It has been said that she was the
only person from whom Connolly had no secrets.

“When Liam Mellows escaped from detention in England and was smuggled back to Ireland to lead
the Rising in the West of Ireland, it was Winnie who accompanied him on the trip from Belfast to
Dublin. On Easter Saturday night, Winnie stayed all night at Liberty Hall preparing mobilisation
orders and officersʼ commissions for the ICA. When she reported in again at 8am on Easter Monday,
her first job was to type out the mobilisation orders for the four city battalions of what was now the
unified Army of the Irish Republic. At noon, the ICA formed in ranks outside Liberty Hall. Carney’s
place was at the front with James Connolly when it marched off. She was the only woman who took
part in the initial occupation of the GPO.

“Present during Pearse’s proclamation of an Irish Republic, she would enter the GPO armed with a
typewriter under one arm, and a Webley revolver in her hand. After Connolly became wounded, she
refused to leave his side. When Pearse ordered that all women and wounded should leave – she
refused. Carney, alongside Elizabeth O’Farrell and Julia Grenan, left the GPO with the rest of the
rebels when the building became engulfed in flames.

“Having retreated to a new headquarters in nearby Moore Street, when the time came to
surrender, they filed out behind a white flag. Connolly had suggested to Winnie that she remove
her military belt so that she could not easily be identified as a combatant; Carney’s response was
to write her name on the belt and continue wearing it.

“Following the rising she was interned within both Kilmainham Gaol and Mountjoy prison, before
being deported to Aylesbury prison in England alongside Helena Molony and other female
Republicans. Whilst Countess Markievicz was held as a convicted prisoner, Carney and others held
internee status. In an effort to join Markievicz, Carney and her fellow internees requested to be
treated as criminals and forgo all it benefits in order to end the Countess’s isolation. Their request
was denied. Carney was eventually released Christmas eve 1916.

“After her release from prison on 24 December 1916, Winnie found it hard to settle into routine trade
union affairs although she continued to work for the ITGWU in both Belfast and Dublin. Throughout
her life, she refused to romanticise the Rising or trade on her relationship with Connolly. She
remained committed to her principles and always argued that the Rising had been the right thing to
do under circumstances.

“In 1918 general election, Carney stood unsuccessfully for Sinn Féin on a Socialist Republican
platform in east Belfast. She was one of only 2 female candidates in the entire election.
During the War for Independence, Carney was Secretary of the Irish Republican Prisoners
Dependentsʼ Fund, a role she would continue to perform during the Irish Civil War. After the Anglo-
Irish Treaty, Carney sided with the Anti-Treaty forces and was arrested several times. In July 1922,
her home in Carlisle Circus was raided by the B-Specials, who seized books which allegedly
demonstrated “her connection with Bolshevism” and documents proving her role within the IRA.

“Carney was imprisoned in Armagh jail wherein she immediately initiated protest against her
internment without trial and criminal status. She was finally released on the grounds of ill-health.
Following the Civil War Carney was an outspoken critic of Éamon de Valera and his governments.
She remained active within revolutionary socialist and republican groups across Belfast which faced
attacks from both unionist gangs like the ‘Dawson Bates Drumming clubs’ and the might of the
catholic Church.

“It was within this period of agitation that she would be meet her future partner William McBride, an
ex-Ulster volunteer and Orangeman, with whom she would spend the rest of her life organising with.
Winifred Carney died November 1943. In her lifetime, she had served as secretary of a pioneering
trade union, participated in the Easter Rising, become the first woman to stand in a parliamentary
election in Belfast and been imprisoned on multiple occasions for her socialist and republican
beliefs. At the time of her passing, she was remembered in the pages of Labour newspaper ‘The
Torch’ as someone who was ‘deep and loyal in her friendships and in her allegiances, political as
well as personal.’

“For Republicans who remember her today let her life reminds us that our struggle must be truly
Republican. Concerned not with unification, but with liberation.

With the liberation of women. With the liberation of our class. With the liberation of the entire
Island from all alien occupations – British and European. Imperialism: whether red, white and blue,
or blue & gold stands to inhibit the Socialist Republican objective: ‘the right of the people of Ireland to
the ownership of Ireland and to the unfettered control of Irish destinies’.”
