“Wear More Clothes” – Pupils and Staff Told As School Heating Bills to be Cut

Students and teachers across the Six Counties have been told to ”wear more clothing” to cut heating bills.

The announcement this week by the Education Authority (EA), that school gas and electricity bills are set to rise by about £8m by March 2027, displays the shameful and out-of-touch state of the current education system.

Almost one in five children in the Six Counties live in poverty. It has been found that pupils are already being forced to wear multiple layers of clothing and use hot water bottles in class. However, not all children have the resources to do so. Children in poverty often use school as an escape, where they can find comfort and warm meals. No child should be required to seek out a safe haven, they must have the adequate resources to live comfortably year-round.

The idea that students and teachers across the Six Counties are now going to suffer physically and intellectually, as a result of U.S. imperialist war efforts should be unequivocally condemned by all. No child simply attempting to proceed with their studies, should be halted by the failures of detached bourgeois institutions.

Politicians continue to line their pockets, while remaining silent on such detrimental issues. In a Socialist Republic, all aspects of Imperialism in Ireland will be eradicated, from economic insecurity under occupation to the capitalist institutions who impose such suffering on the working-class and their families.
